Grassroots Fundraising

As we grow, we rely on individuals to further our mission of providing computers and technology education to underserved children in Houston. Individuals, groups, businesses, schools and clubs can raise funds by holding events or participating in established events.

Events can include fun runs and walks, bake sales, silent auctions, or other organized activities. Aside from events, you can set-up a booth to raise funds and awareness at a local community event, such as a picnic or festival. The possibilities are endless!

It is very important for Comp-U-Dopt to be aware of fundraising events that are being held for our benefit. We will assist you any way we can, but we do not have the capacity to plan, schedule or organize your event. Thank you for understanding our limitations in this situation.

In order for Comp-U-Dopt to review your event, please submit your event. We understand that all details for your proposed event may not be available at the time of your submission, but please fill out the form to the best of your knowledge. We will review your proposal and contact you regarding the next steps.

Below are a few ideas that may help get you started with your own grassroots fundraising campaign.

Glass/Recycling Drive
Recycling and other environmentally friendly activities are enjoying more support today than ever before. Any activity that is environmentally friendly has a huge advantage over other activities. A glass or bottle drive is definitely in this category. A wonderful mix of making money while helping preserve our environment. Let your membership or community know that you are having a glass drive, and all the details of it, at a meeting, by letter or a mention in the local paper. What you want to do is let everyone know what you are doing thereby giving them time to put their empty containers aside, to make your efforts worthwhile. Fix a date for pickup (this could be over a period of a day to a week). When advising people of your activity include a contact name and phone number, so those wanting to participate can advise you of their involvement and addresses. The more people involved the better your success will be.
Counting: ONE, TWO, THREE
Here's a fund-raising idea to raise money and to keep people guessing. It's simple, inexpensive, easy to do and is adaptable to almost any hub event.
What you do is fill a vessel with some kind of a filler that can be counted, then you charge a set amount for a person to enter a guess of how many individual fillers the vessel contains to win a prize. People can enter as many times as they like, the more they enter the more you make.
On the large scale if you are hosting a golf day and you can get a car dealership to sponsor the event you could try to fill a car with golf balls, the closest entry wins either the car or a basket full of auto related goodies. Alternatively it could be a golf bag filled with golf balls to win the golf bag or a years' free membership to the golf club.
On a smaller scale you simply fill a valuable vase with jelly beans, the winner getting both the vase and the jelly beans. The point is this fund-raiser is as variable as your imagination can make it.
Cook Books
Cook books are always in fashion. From ethnic flavours to TV chefs to diets, all sorts of themes are used to sell cook books. So devise your own theme and off you go.
By having members of your group donate their recipes you stand a better chance of having a sales base on which to build. This also offers the opportunity to reflect the ethnicity or uniqueness of the local area and therefore increases the appeal to the local community so sales will be helped.
The book itself does not need to be a hard cover, glossy, picture filled epic. Design the book to those who you want to sell it to and what resources are available.
The effort to collect recipes, collate, print, binding/stapling can time consuming and tiring, so a group of 3-4 to share the load may be desirable. On the up side this project can be a very sociable and enjoyable one especially if the people entrusted with this project enjoy cooking.
Always include the names of the donors in recognition of their participation and as a promotional tool.
Pay careful attention to the price. The higher the price the harder it is to sell. Also the asking price should be in relation to the finished product.
Holding a bake sale could really help promote sales.
Office Buffet
Hot pizza, spaghetti, Chinese buffet, subs or even burgers are a nice change from last night’s leftovers when it comes to lunchtime at the office. Call a local restaurant and ask them about purchasing basic food (pizzas, hamburgers and fries, turkey or ham subs, fruit plate) in bulk. Set a date, sign everyone up around the office (be sure to charge enough to cover costs and make a profit) and have fun fundraising!
Rubber Ducky Race
Who doesn’t like a good race? For this event you will want a large number of ducks and a body of water to float them down. Get a roll of raffle tickets and mark each duck with a corresponding number. Use a permanent marker. Sell the raffle tickets and let people know there is a rubber ducky with their number on it. Set up a starting line where all of the duckys will be dumped into the water at once. You may want to find large boxes or crates to dump them from.
Beach Day at the Office
Wearing a suit to work every day can get tiresome. Everyone wants a break from time to time and they’ll probably pay to get one. Work it out so the office allows employees to purchase passes to wear something casual, jeans, pajamas, shorts etc. Have fun with it and come up with themes (beach day, super hero day) A great way to raise money and bring employees closer together.
